If we analyze the plant of the Mayan town of Chichén Itzà we note the
presence of two Cenotes: Sacrificial Cenote and Cenote
Xtoloc. Placed North and South of the town the two Cenotes were respectively devoted to sacrificial use and to fresh water supply.
In the following picture, in a Northern view and shot from the West side of the El Castillo piramid , is the Venus platform from which the Sacred Way departs; 300 mt long , the Sacred Way connected the platform to the Sacrificial Cenote. From the inside of El Castillo piramid, but this time facing South, it's a view over the area of Cenote Xtoloc called also the Civil Cenote, probably the real source of fresh water for the town. All the area of Cenote Xtoloc is covered of a dense vegetation that blocks the aerial view on the clear waters of this cenote. |
