We move now east , in the coastal area of Quintana Roo state and precisely in a 10 square km wide area around the Mayan town of Tulum . Tulum has been a fortified outpost facing the sea.

All the civil activities seem to have been spent outside the fortification , where the majority of the population was residing, while the town itself was frequented only by people of high rank.

It looks like that Tulum has been founded during 900 D.C. while the fortifications should have been built later.

In this area are two of the longer complex of underground caverns known to earth, that someone has defined as 'liquid catacombs'.
